St. Luke’s Neo-Natal Intensive Care

Sioux City, Iowa

W.A. Klinger was contracted to complete the St. Luke's Birth Center renovation located on the 3rd floor of St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City. Phase One of the renovation involved complete remodeling of the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The expanded unit features 20 separate acute care rooms, architectural soffits and walls, and etched glass, all with consistent designs incorporated into the floors and ceilings. One very unique feature is the fiber optic lighting specially designed to create the effect of twinkling star light. The amazing amount fiber optic cable used for this effect throughout the unit would stretch almost 7 miles if placed end to end.

The 15,400-square-foot remodel and expansion presented special challenges due to the limited access and the heightened needs for noise, dust, and infection control in the hospital environment.

Despite the challenges, W.A. Klinger made sure the updates and expansion were completed on schedule and ready for the Children's Miracle Network broadcast that was held on the unit when construction finished.
