Western Iowa Tech Community College - Robert E. Dunker Student Center

Sioux City, Iowa

Western Iowa Tech Community College selected W. A. Klinger to manage the construction of its new state-of-the-art Student Life and Wellness Center, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing student life outside the classroom.  This 44,000 SF, two-story, $5.5 million facility cost is designed to serve as a recreation and fitness hub.

The center's prominent feature is a full-size gymnasium, which includes a basketball court, two cross-court basketball courts, a volleyball court, and a three-lane walkway/jogging track.  Additional amenities include a cardio fitness area with treadmills, elliptical machines, and other cardio equipment, a strength training room, and both large and small aerobics rooms for exercise sessions.

The student life area is an open space for students to gather, socialize, watch television, and play games.  It also houses office space for the student activities coordinator and the student senate.

Initially designed to meet LEED Silver certification requirements, the project surpassed expectations and was awarded LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Constructed with masonry bearing walls and structural steel, the building features brick veneer exterior walls with CMU backup and a glass curtain wall.  W. A. Klinger served as the general contractor for this project, delivering a facility that significantly elevates the quality of student life at Western Iowa Tech Community College.
